JBL Flip 5 speaker WON'T make any sound on Chromebook

After searching for a solution to the very annoying problem it became apparent that people either had not really experienced this or hadn't been discovered by the almighty search engines. Either way you now are reading one solution to the problem. How to get sound to come out of your flip 5 speaker while paired and connected via bluetooth to your fabulous, yet rather mysterious and sometimes clunky, chromebook.

The following two pictures tell the tale.

  • First pair and connect the amazing flip 5 JBL speaker by clicking the digital time clock in the second picture. It should be always visible in the lower right corner of your inexpensive chromebook display. In the picture above it reads 4:26.
  • Next see if sound magically comes out at this point. If so you have been blessed by our most likely infinite Creator. Rejoice in that knowledge.
  • Now that no sound is coming out, look in the first picture above. Notice there is a set of headphones on the right, next to the little speaker picture on the left.
  • Click on the headphones.
  • The second picture will appear. Click the JBL flip 5 line. A green circle, with a black check-mark will appear.
  • Now sound may come blaring out of the flip 5, because you used several different volume pop-ups to turn the volume all the way up. Now turn the volume down.
  • Thank you Jesus.
  • If there is still no sound, check to see that sound is not muted or turned all the way down.
  • If there is still no sound, then this solution did not work for you.
  • Notice: at no time did we click the little butterfly emblem. It is tempting, but accomplishes nothing related to sound. This is most likely because butterflies are silent.
